What is CRS Score? (Comprehensive Ranking System)

The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) is a points-based ranking system used by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to rank candidates in the Express Entry pool. Your CRS score is determined by human capital factors — age, education, language proficiency, and Canadian work experience. The higher your score, the stronger your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence.

Scores range from 0 to 1,200 points. IRCC conducts regular Express Entry draws inviting the highest-scoring candidates. Use our free CRS calculator to estimate your score and understand exactly which factors to improve. For a full explanation see our What is CRS Score guide.

How is CRS Score Calculated? Full Breakdown

The CRS score is calculated using the official IRCC CRS criteria. Maximum is 1,200 points across four sections:

  • Section A — Core Human Capital (max 500 pts): Age, education, first official language (4 skills), second language, and Canadian work experience. This section differs slightly if you have an accompanying spouse.
  • Section B — Spouse/Partner Factors (max 40 pts): Spouse's education level, language test scores, and Canadian work experience — only when your spouse is accompanying you to Canada.
  • Section C — Skill Transferability (max 100 pts): Combinations of foreign work experience + language proficiency, education + language, and trade certification. See our CEC CRS calculator for the Canadian Experience Class grid.
  • Section D — Additional Points (max 600 pts): Provincial nomination (+600), PNP stream job offer (+200 or +50), French language bonus (+25 or +50), Canadian post-secondary education (+15 or +30), sibling in Canada (+15).
