CRS Points by Education Level — Visual Breakdown

Here is a visual breakdown of every education level and what it means for your Express Entry CRS score and overall competitiveness.

PhD / Doctoral Degree Maximum
150 pts
140 pts with spouse
Maximum education points. A PhD from any recognised institution worldwide qualifies. Foreign PhDs require an ECA from a designated organisation.
Master's / Professional Degree Excellent
135 pts
126 pts with spouse
Includes MBA, LLM, MD, and any master's-level degree taken after a bachelor's. Must be at least 1 year in duration at the post-bachelor's level.
Two Post-Secondary Credentials Very Good
128 pts
119 pts with spouse
You hold two separate post-secondary credentials — at least one of which is 3+ years. Example: a bachelor's degree plus a 1-year post-graduate diploma. Both must be separately earned (not one awarded with another).
3-Year Bachelor's Degree Good
120 pts
112 pts with spouse
The most common qualification for Express Entry candidates. A 4-year bachelor's degree in any field qualifies. A 3-year bachelor's from India, Pakistan, the UK, and Australia also qualifies at this level.
2-Year Post-Secondary Diploma Moderate
98 pts
91 pts with spouse
A 2-year college diploma, associate degree, or bachelor's program of 2 years qualifies at this level. This is a significant step below a 3-year bachelor's.
1-Year Post-Secondary Certificate Lower
90 pts
84 pts with spouse
A 1-year graduate certificate, post-graduate diploma, or 1-year bachelor's degree qualifies. Common for candidates from countries with 3-year bachelor's programs who then completed a 1-year PG diploma.
High School Diploma Minimum
28 pts
28 pts with spouse
Secondary school completion. This is the minimum education level for Federal Skilled Worker eligibility. A score of 28 is significantly lower than post-secondary credentials — upgrading to a post-secondary diploma is strongly recommended.
No Credential Zero
0 pts
0 pts with spouse
Zero education points. Candidates without any formal credential may not meet Federal Skilled Worker eligibility requirements. Canadian Experience Class (CEC) may still be available with sufficient Canadian work experience.

Canadian Education Bonus Points — Section C

Studying in Canada adds bonus points under Section C (Additional Points). This is separate from the core education points in Section A above.

You earn 15 CRS points for completing a 1–2 year Canadian post-secondary credential, or 30 CRS points for a 3-year or longer Canadian post-secondary credential. A Canadian credential also strengthens your skill transferability bonus calculation.

Canadian credentials do not require an ECA assessment — they are accepted directly. Foreign credentials must be assessed by a designated ECA body such as WES, ICAS, or IQAS before they can be used in your CRS score.

Canadian Credential TypeSection C Bonus PointsNotes
3-year or longer Canadian post-secondary+30 ptsUniversity or college; must be a completed credential
1–2 year Canadian post-secondary+15 ptsCollege diploma or certificate; must be a completed credential
Foreign credential (any level)0 bonusECA required; no Section C bonus

Skill Transferability Bonus — Education + Work Experience or Language

Section B of the CRS awards additional points when your education combines with Canadian work experience or strong language skills. Maximum bonus: 50 CRS points.

🎓 Education + Canadian Work Experience Up to 25 pts

Post-secondary credential (any level) + 1 year Canadian skilled work experience = 13 pts. Post-secondary credential + 2+ years Canadian work experience = 25 pts. This rewards candidates who studied abroad and then gained Canadian experience.

🎓 Education + Strong Language (CLB 7–9) Up to 25 pts

Post-secondary credential + CLB 7+ in all 4 language skills = 13 pts. Post-secondary credential + CLB 9+ in all 4 skills = 25 pts. Use the IELTS to CRS Calculator to see your language bonus. This is one of the easiest skill transferability bonuses to earn.

💼 Canadian Education + Work Experience Up to 25 pts

Canadian 1–2 yr post-secondary + 1 yr foreign skilled work experience = 13 pts. Canadian 3+ yr post-secondary + 2+ yrs foreign work experience = 25 pts. Candidates on a PGWP studying in Canada should maximise this combination.

💼 Canadian Education + Language Up to 25 pts

Canadian 1–2 yr credential + CLB 7 in all 4 skills = 13 pts. Canadian 3+ yr credential + CLB 9 in all 4 skills = 25 pts. Canadian international students who achieve CLB 9 IELTS can earn all 25 pts here, adding to the 30-pt Canadian credential bonus above.

Key insight for international students in Canada: A candidate with a Canadian 3-year post-secondary degree, CLB 9 IELTS, and 1+ year PGWP work experience can earn: 120 pts (education) + 30 pts (Canadian credential bonus) + 25 pts (skill transferability: Canadian edu + language) + 25 pts (skill transferability: Canadian edu + work exp) = 200 pts from education-related factors alone. Use the CEC CRS Calculator to model this scenario.

ECA — Foreign Credential Assessment for CRS 2026

A foreign educational credential can only be used for CRS education points after it has been assessed by an IRCC-designated organisation (ECA).

The most commonly used ECA body is World Education Services (WES). Other designated organisations include ICAS, IQAS, PEBC (for pharmacists), and several professional regulatory bodies.

Your ECA report must confirm the Canadian equivalency of your foreign degree. A 3-year bachelor's degree from India that WES assesses as equivalent to a Canadian bachelor's degree earns the full 120 CRS education points.

How to Maximise CRS Education Points — 2026 Strategies

Here are the most effective ways to increase your education-related CRS score in 2026.

1. Add a Second Post-Secondary Credential

If you hold a 3-year bachelor's degree (120 pts), adding even a 1-year post-graduate diploma or certificate bumps you to the "two or more credentials" category — earning 128 pts. That is an 8-point gain for a 1-year program.

2. Complete a Canadian Post-Secondary Program

A 3-year or longer Canadian credential adds 30 bonus points (Section C) on top of your core education score. Combined with skill transferability bonuses, Canadian graduates can earn 50–55 extra CRS points that foreign-educated candidates cannot access.

3. Maximise Skill Transferability With IELTS CLB 9

IELTS CLB 9 in all 4 skills combined with any post-secondary credential adds 25 skill transferability points. Use the IELTS to CRS Calculator to model how improving your IELTS score multiplies your education bonus.

4. Get Your Foreign Credential ECA-Assessed at the Highest Possible Level

Ensure you submit all supporting transcripts with your ECA application. A 4-year bachelor's degree sometimes gets underassessed as a 3-year equivalent if transcripts are incomplete. Higher ECA equivalency = more CRS points.

5. Gain Canadian Work Experience (PGWP or Work Permit)

1+ year of Canadian skilled work experience combined with your education earns 13–25 skill transferability points. This is the biggest multiplier for education points. See the CEC CRS Calculator to model your full score with Canadian experience.

❓ FAQ — CRS Score for Education
How many CRS points do I get for a bachelor's degree?

A 3-year or longer bachelor's degree earns 120 CRS points (without spouse) or 112 points (with spouse). A 2-year bachelor's earns 98 pts, and a 1-year credential earns 90 pts. These are Section A core education points per the IRCC CRS grid.

Does a master's degree give more CRS points than a bachelor's?

Yes. A master's degree earns 135 CRS points (without spouse) versus 120 pts for a 3-year bachelor's. That is a 15-point increase. A PhD earns 150 pts — 30 pts more than a bachelor's degree.

Does a Canadian degree give extra CRS points?

Yes. A Canadian post-secondary credential of 3+ years adds 30 bonus CRS points under Section C (Additional Points), on top of the core Section A education score. A 1–2 year Canadian credential adds 15 bonus points. Foreign credentials do not receive this bonus.

Do I need an ECA for Express Entry education points?

Yes, all foreign credentials must be assessed by an IRCC-designated ECA organisation such as WES, ICAS, or IQAS. Canadian credentials do not require an ECA. Without an ECA, your foreign degree cannot be counted in your CRS score.

What is the maximum CRS score for education?

The maximum core CRS education score is 150 points (PhD, without spouse) or 140 points (PhD, with spouse). Adding the Canadian credential bonus (30 pts) and skill transferability bonus (50 pts) means education-related factors can contribute up to 230 CRS points in total.

How does a 3-year Indian bachelor's degree count for CRS?

A 3-year bachelor's degree from India (such as a B.Com, BA, or BSc) is typically assessed by WES as equivalent to a Canadian bachelor's degree, earning 120 CRS points. You must submit an ECA from a designated organisation. Some 3-year Indian degrees may be assessed differently depending on the institution and program — always verify with your chosen ECA body.

Can I increase my CRS education points after submitting my profile?

Yes. You can update your Express Entry profile if you complete a new educational credential after submission. A new Canadian post-graduate diploma, for example, immediately adds to your CRS score. You must provide the updated ECA assessment (for foreign credentials) or official transcript (for Canadian credentials).
